From Liliane Lijn on the Solar Hills project:

In 2005, I was the first Artist in Residence at the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, as part of the Arts Council England International Artists Fellowship in partnership with the Leonardo Network and NASA. The concept and subsequent development of Solar Hills is the result of this Fellowship. Solar Hills is an art-science collaboration between myself and the astrophysicist John Vallerga to create large-scale solar installations in the landscape that define the horizon with light. I would like to speak about the genesis of this collaborative project and the way in which it relates to my work and ideas as an artist. I would also like to explore the different ways in which such a project can be said to be collaborative and what can be gained by both parties from this collaboration.
